La Fondazione Sozzani, presenta “SHE” una mostra delle fotografie di Viviane Sassen.
Nata ad Amsterdam nel 1972, da più di vent’anni esplora con il suo lavoro ambiti differenti nella moda, nel ritratto, nelle arti visive, costruendo un suo personale codice visivo. Pervase da atmosfere misteriose, le fotografie di Viviane Sassen sono spesso segnate da ombre lunghe, silhouettes e contrasti netti. In bilico tra realtà e finzione, sembrano suggerire dimensioni stranianti, impenetrabili, ma che nascono dalla vita quotidiana. Alcuni lavori rivelano un richiamo all’inconscio e ricordano il surrealismo, con riferimenti al disordine e al disorientamento: come nelle posizioni anomale dei modelli che spesso richiamano la danza o la performance.
Viviane Sassen ha studiato Fashion Design a Utrecht (presso l’HKU) e fotografia al Dutch Art Institute di Atelier Arnhem, ma molti dei suoi colori surreali provengono dall’Africa, dove ha vissuto per tre anni da bambina, al seguito del padre medico. “I miei ricordi dal Kenya erano molto visivi”, racconta Viviane “Ero una bimba sensibile con un’intensa immaginazione e captavo tutto quello che accadeva intorno a me”. Nel corso degli anni molte delle sue immagini più enigmatiche si sono slegate dal luogo fisici in cui sono state realizzate e viaggiano piuttosto sul confine tra veglia e sogno. Presente nel 2013 alla 55° Biennale di Venezia curata da Massimiliano Gioni, Viviane Sassen ha vinto numerosi premi e riconoscimenti tra cui l’Infinity Award dell’ICP di New York nel 2011 e il premio nazionale olandese Prix de Rome nel 2007. Per la mostra Umbra è stata candidata al Deutsche Börse Photography Prize nel 2015. Sassen ha intrapreso una carriera internazionale nella fotografia della moda, ma appartiene a una generazione di artisti-fotografi che non fanno una distinzione netta tra ricerca personale o lavoro commerciale e redazionale. Per lei la fotografia è quasi sempre personale. Le sue immagini sono state pubblicate in riviste come Purple, i-D, Dazed and Confused, Vogue e The New York Times Magazine, e in molte campagne pubblicitarie per Adidas, Stella McCartney, Miu Miu, Missoni, Bottega Veneta e Louis Vuitton. Nel 2009 ha esposto allo spazio Forma di Milano e nel 2008 al Museo FOAM di Amsterdam. Nel 2012 una grande retrospettiva del suo lavoro ha avuto luogo all’Huis Marseille Museum for Photography di Amsterdam, ai Rencontres d’Arles Festival, alla Scottish National Portrait Gallery di Edimburgo, al Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia, USA; al Fotografie Forum di Francoforte, al Fotomuseum Winterthur, Svizzera. Con il suo lavoro “Umbra” è quest’anno presente al Museum of Contemporary Photography di Chicago e alla Deichtorhallen di Amburgo. Importanti mostre collettive nel 2011 sono state “New Photography” al Museum of Modern Art, New York; “No Fashion, Please!” alla Vienna Kunsthalle; e “Figure and Ground” presso il Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art di Toronto, parte del Contact Photography Festival.
La Fondazione Sozzani è un’istituzione culturale costituita a Milano da Carla Sozzani nel 2016 per la promozione della fotografia, della cultura, della moda e delle arti. La Fondazione ha assunto il patronato della Galleria Carla Sozzani e intende proseguire il percorso dell’importante funzione pubblica che la galleria svolge da 27 anni.

The Fondazione Sozzani, presents “SHE” a selection of photographs by Viviane Sassen. Born in Amsterdam in 1972, for more than twenty years Sassen has been devising her personal visual codes in fashion, portraiture, and visual arts. Imbued with rarefied atmospheres, Viviane Sassen’s photographs are often marked by long shadows, silhouettes and high contrasts. Suspended between reality and fiction, her images suggest unusual, almost impenetrable dimensions that rise from everyday life. Some works reveal a call to the unconscious or subtle reminders of surrealism, with references to disorder and disorientation seen in the unusual positions of models in dance or performance postures.
Viviane Sassen studied fashion design in Utrecht (at HKU) and photography at the Dutch Art Institute of Atelier Arnhem, but many of her surreal colors come from Africa, where she lived for three years as a child, following her physician father. Viviane says: “My memories from Kenya are very visual, I was a sensitive child with a keen fantasy life and I picked up on everything that was happening around me.”Over the years, her more enigmatic pictures have moved away from the physical site where they have been realized to inhabit a space on the border between waking and dreams. Included in 2013 at the 55th Venice Biennale curated by Massimiliano Gioni, Viviane Sassen received multiple honors, such as the Infinity Award of NYC in New York in 2011 and the Dutch Prix de Rome Prize in 2007. She was nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize for her exhibition Umbra in 2015. Sassen embarked on an international career in fashion photography, but she belongs to a generation of photo-artists who do not make a clear distinction between personal research and their commercial and editorial work. For her the photograph is almost always a personal view. Her images are seen in magazines such as Purple, i-D, Dazed and Confused, Vogue and The New York Times Magazine, and in many ad campaigns including Adidas, Stella McCartney, Miu Miu, Missoni, Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton. In 2009 Vivian Sassen exhibited at the Spazio Forma in Milan and in 2008 at the Foam Museum in Amsterdam. In 2012 a traveling retrospective of her work took place at the Hus Marseille Museum for Photography in Amsterdam, touring in many venues like the Rencontres d’ Arles Festival, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, Savannah College of Art and Design, Georgia, USA, the Frankfurt Forum Photography and the Winterthur Photo Museum, Switzerland. With her latest work, “Umbra” this year she is exhibiting at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago and at Deichtorhallen in Hamburg. Notable group shows in 2011 included “New Photography” at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; “No Fashion, Please!” at the Vienna Kunsthalle; and “Figure and Ground” at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto as part of the Contact Photography Festival.
The Sozzani Foundation was established in 2016 by Carla Sozzani and is dedicated to the promotion of culture through photography, fashion, the fine arts, and applied arts. The Foundation has assumed the patronage of Galleria Carla Sozzani and continues all relevant public functions that the Galleria has supported for the past 27 years.
