Il lavoro di Christiane Löhr nasce dal contatto diretto con la natura nella quale trova gli elementi e i segni del suo linguaggio espressivo: i semi di diverse piante, come cardi, edera, bardane, diventano i materiali per sculture di piccole dimensioni, oppure i crini di cavallo che utilizza per realizzare la trama dei suoi “disegni” tridimensionali, esili tessiture a tutto tondo, installazioni impalpabili che possono stare nel palmo di una mano o anche occupare grandi ambienti. L’artista è guidata dalla stessa geometria interna dei suoi materiali, così da realizzare architetture fluttuanti, sorprendentemente leggere e fragili, ma al tempo stesso forti e solide, che rivelano il suo interesse sperimentale per lo spazio e insieme un’attenzione costante al mondo intimo e segreto delle cose. Superficie e spazio sono i temi principali dei suoi disegni. Le sue strutture lineari “crescono” da un punto della parte inferiore della pagina al bordo superiore, e sviluppano quello che lei definisce un “flusso in uscita, dall’interno verso l’esterno”. Otticamente sembra che possano crescere all’infinito e conquistare la stanza.

Christiane Löhr è nata nel 1965 a Wiesbaden e vive e lavora tra Colonia e Prato. Ha studiato con Jannis Kounellis alla Kunstakademie di Düsseldorf. Nel 2016 è stata insignita del XIX Premio Pino Pascali e la Kunsthaus Baselland di Basel le ha dedicato un’importante mostra personale. Ha esposto in numerosi spazi pubblici e privati: Jason MacCoy Gallery, New York; Villa e Collezione Panza, Varese; MART Rovereto; Museum of Arts and Design, New York; Museum Wiesbaden; Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, Palma de Mallorca; Kunsthalle Bern; Kunstmuseum Bonn; Tucci Russo Studio per l’Arte Contemporanea, Torre Pellice; Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum, Shizuoka; Fattoria di Celle, Collezione Gori, Pistoia. Ha partecipato a mostre collettive in importanti gallerie e musei in Italia e all’estero: 49ª Biennale di Venezia (2001); Terre vulnerabili, HangarBicocca, Milano (2010); Autoritratti. Iscrizioni del femminile nell’arte italiana contemporanea, MAMbo Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna (2013); The Human Condition, National Centre for Contemporary Arts NCCA, Mosca (2015). Nel 2018, lo scultore Tony Cragg l’ha invitata a realizzare una mostra presso lo Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden da lui fondato a Wuppertal. Nell’estate 2020 la casa editrice Hatje Cantz di Berlino ha pubblicato un’ampia monografia su Christiane Löhr e in ottobre un suo lavoro permanente sarà installato nella chiesa di San Fedele a Milano.

The artwork of Christiane Löhr stems from her direct contact with nature, where she finds the elements and signs of her expressive language:  the seeds of various plants such as thistle, ivy and burdock, become the material used in her small-scale sculptures, or horsehair which is used to realize the texture of her three-dimensional “drawings”, subtle, all-round structures, impalpable installations which can fit in the palm of one’s hand or large-scale works. The artist is guided by the same internal geometry as her materials, in such a manner as to realize surprisingly light and fragile yet powerful and sturdy, fluctuating architectures which reveal her experimental interest for space together with her constant attention to the intimate, secret world of things.  Surfaces and space are the primary themes of her drawings. Her linear structures “grow” from a point on the bottom of the page to the upper margins, and develop what she terms as “exiting outflow, from the interior to the exterior”.  In appearance, they seem to be able to grow infinitely and take over the room.

Christiane Löhr was born in Wiesbaden in 1965 and lives and works in Köln and Prato. She studied with Jannis Kounellis at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. In 2016, she was conferred the XIX Pino Pascali Award and the Kunsthaus Baselland in Basel dedicated an important solo exhibit to her works. She has exhibited in numerous public and private venues:  the Jason MacCoy Gallery, New York; Villa e Collezione Panza, Varese; MART Rovereto; the Museum of Arts and Design, New York; the Museum Wiesbaden; the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, Palma de Mallorca; the Kunsthalle in Bern; the Kunstmuseum in Bonn; the Tucci Russo Studio per l’Arte Contemporanea, Torre Pellice; the Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum, Shizuoka; the Fattoria di Celle, Collezione Gori, Pistoia. She has taken part in collective exhibitions in leading galleries and museums in Italy and abroad: the 49th Venice Biennale (2001); Terre vulnerabili, HangarBicocca, Milano (2010); Autoritratti. Iscrizioni del femminile nell’arte italiana contemporanea, the MAMbo Museo d’Arte Moderna in Bologna (2013); The Human Condition, National Centre for Contemporary Arts NCCA, Moscow (2015). In 2018, the sculptor Tony Cragg invited Löhr to realise an exhibit at the Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden which he founded in Wuppertal. In the summer of 2020, the Hatje Cantz publishing house of Berlin published a thorough monograph on Christiane Löhr and in October, one of her works will be on permanent exhibition at the Church of San Fedele in Milan.
